Graffiti: Wall Writers (Trailer)

This new documentary by Roger Gastman looks like it’s going to be incredible! Speaking to a slew of graffiti writers from the first generation who started it all, this documentary tells the tale of the birth of the movement.

Official statement:

From director Roger Gastman—a producer of the Academy Award-nominated documentary Exit Through the Gift Shop—comes Wall Writers, a documentary on graffiti in its innocence.

Through unprecedented access to TAKI 183, CORNBREAD, and a host of other legendary writers, Wall Writers tells the story of a time when underprivileged city kids refused to keep lurking in the shadows, when the streets were so wild that fame and infamy became indistinct, when art became a democracy and self-promotion became an art.

And the narration is done by John Waters!

Graffiti: Piece By Piece [Documentary]

Piece By Piece documents San Francisco's graffiti culture from the early 1980s to 2004. It is narrated by San Francisco graffiti artist Senor One, better known as Renos. The San Francisco Bay Guardian's Cheryl Eddy singled the film out as the highlight of the 2006 Hi/Lo film festival, calling it "an educational experience" and "a thoughtful document". In a full review for that same paper, Johnny Ray Huston said it was "a thorough history that still makes time ... for abstract, lyrical flowing passages". Huston complained that sections such as those featuring Tie One or Reminisce could make movies in themselves, and wished to see more detailing of artists' entries into the legitimate art world. He concluded that the film and director "succeeded at a mighty task" and were interested in displaying "a deep but entertaining understanding of the city as both a historical site and a nexus for contemporary change". Rory L. Aronsky in Film Threat wrote that the documentary "gets this graffiti culture completely right" while for Dennis Harvey in Variety it was "an excellent overview of two decades' graffiti in San Francisco".

Graffiti: Etern’s Pyrograffiti Brands London

Branding city walls, fences, and benches in London like cattle, Etern takes an interesting and innovating approach to graffiti.

“For my last trip to London I invented the “pirograffiti”, a new system to leave my eternal mark without risking to be arrested by the police. I made two prototypes of tool- stamps made iron with the inscription ETERN. I heat these tools heat with a blowtorch. As soon as they are hot enough, I stamp them by burning a wooden surface or a plastic surface which get melted. It is a simple and very effective system that will surely appeal to lovers of innovations. The first tests were made in Begur, a beautiful village on the Costa Brava (Catalunya).

“In London I spread my piroETERNs to many places, but the public parks (StMary’s Church, Gardens, Islington Green, among others..)were the best places for my interventions. Islington, East End and Hoxton have been the areas where I left most of the tracks.” -Etern

Hotel Au Vieux Panier is an amazing and unique space where every room is completely designed by a different artist. Yesterday Big Addict posted this video giving a behind the scenes look at Tilt and his crew as they completely saturate the room with tags and fill-ins.

Graffiti: Tilt’s Graffiti Hotel Room

French graffiti writer Tilt teamed up with the Hotel Au Vieux Panier in Marseilles, France to design a room. Hotel Au Vieux Panier is an amazing and unique space where every room is completely designed by a different artist.

“The Hotel Au Vieux Panier asked me to design a room, I first told them that I wasn’t interested doing just decoration in the room but I wanted to create something that will look more like an installation. I thought about it also as a huge canvas where I needed to think about the composition and play with the empty white part of the room to accentuate more the idea of chaos on the other part. Then I asked my friend Tober who gat a great old school style for tags, Grizz who is also the man behind the camera and Don Cho who is a Hip Hop singer from Marseille but who used to be a tagger from my home town Toulouse. It took one week to do the whole thing cause the idea was to exaggerate what you can usually see in some abandoned places. Too much tags, too much drips, too much sentences, too much throw ups… What I also wanted to show is that people can appreciate any type of graffiti, even the more basic, it’s just a matter of point of view.” -Tilt
